Senapati: The Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA), an apex student body based in Senapati district, has expressed strong condemnation over the alleged actions of Assam Rifles personnel in Waphong Inthan, an Inpui Naga village, on Wednesday.
In a statement, the student body alleged that Assam Rifles troops dismantled village bunkers, gates and signboards or structures set up by residents to safeguard the community from outsiders and intruders. It termed the act a serious violation of the rights and security of the Naga people.
According to the SDSA, the bunkers and gates served as an important line of defence for residents of Waphong Inthan village, helping ensure safety in an area where the threat of outside aggression remains a concern. The association said the structures symbolised the community’s efforts to protect their rights, heritage and security.
The organisation also raised concern over reports of live rounds being fired during the incident, stating that it created panic and fear among residents. It said such actions undermine community security and threaten the right of people to live peacefully without fear or intimidation.
Referring to the ongoing crisis arising from the Kuki-Meitei conflict in Manipur, the student body said it was disheartening to witness actions by an organisation that claims to protect the people of the Northeast and the hill communities. It alleged that recent developments have raised questions about the neutrality of the Assam Rifles.
The association further claimed that the force appeared to favour one community during the crisis, which it said has alienated and caused distress among the Naga people.
“Such selective neutrality is unacceptable and only aggravates the tensions in the region. It is imperative that the Assam Rifles maintain an impartial stance and fulfil their mandate of protecting all communities equally,” the statement said.
Citing what it described as bias and misconduct, the SDSA appealed to the Government of India to remove Assam Rifles personnel from Naga ancestral lands, claiming their presence has contributed to fear and mistrust among the Naga population.
The association added that the Naga people deserve to live in peace and security, and urged the Centre to take immediate steps to address the situation and ensure the safety and sovereignty of the community.
