Imphal: After a total shutdown of petrol pumps in Manipur for several days, the Manipur Petroleum Dealers Fraternity (MPDF) announced on Tuesday that fuel stations across the state will reopen with immediate effect. The decision has brought significant relief to the public as well as transport operators who were severely affected by the disruption.

The decision came after the state government assured enhanced security at petrol pumps following multiple threats to fuel stations in recent days. The government has also assured that strict action will be taken against those involved in targeting petrol pumps.

The indefinite closure, which began on January 10, was in protest against a bomb attack on a fuel station at Moirang in Bishnupur district on January 8. The incident had raised serious concerns over the safety of petroleum dealers and their employees, prompting the fraternity to halt operations across the state.

Speaking to media persons, Jogendra Laishram, convenor of the Manipur Petroleum Dealers Fraternity (MPDF), said the decision to reopen petrol pumps was taken after a meeting with senior government officials led by the Home Commissioner.

“After receiving a positive assurance from the government on our three-point charter of demands concerning highway-related issues, and also considering the hardships being faced by the general public, we have decided to reopen the petrol pumps from today itself,” Laishram said.

He further stated that controlling illegal fuel sales at exorbitant prices and ensuring security at fuel stations are beyond the fraternity’s authority and remain the responsibility of the government.

The MPDF also appealed to all petroleum dealers to cooperate fully and ensure the smooth resumption of fuel supply across Manipur, stressing the need for coordinated efforts to restore normalcy in the state.
