Tripura sees fall in infant, maternal mortality rates, says CM

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said the state has recorded a significant drop in infant and maternal mortality rates, crediting recent investments in healthcare infrastructure and services for the progress.

Speaking at the 19th annual conference of the Tripura chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India, held at the KLS Auditorium of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, Saha said the state’s healthcare system has seen “unprecedented improvements” in recent years.

According to the Chief Minister, complex medical procedures that were once unavailable in the state are now being performed locally. “Kidney transplants are now being done in the state, and steps are being taken to make liver transplants possible as well,” he said, adding that the goal is to reduce the need for patients to travel outside Tripura for advanced treatment.

Saha said the state government has been working to build public confidence in healthcare services through modernisation and improved accessibility. He said upgraded trauma care and enhanced facilities are being planned across district and sub-divisional hospitals as part of efforts to strengthen both rural and urban healthcare.

“The decline in infant and maternal mortality rates reflects the continuous improvements in health services,” he said, reaffirming the government’s aim to make quality medical care available to every resident of Tripura.

The Chief Minister also announced the expansion of telemedicine services under Agartala Government Medical College, saying authorities have been instructed to set up a studio to improve the service.

During the event, two doctors were felicitated for their contributions to the medical field, and a medical student was recognised for academic excellence.
