Guwahati: American shelf introduced at community library

Guwahati: In an effort to foster knowledge exchange and understanding between India and the United States, the American Center in Kolkata and the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata have established the first American Shelf at the Community Library of Assam Seva Samiti, Gopinath Nagar in Guwahati, Assam.

Inaugurated on March 9, 2024, the American Shelf is a permanent resource for the people of Assam, offering a diverse collection of over 80 books covering various topics. The books include classic and contemporary literature, reference materials, English language resources, and children’s books, providing a comprehensive overview of U.S. culture and education.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Consul General Melinda Pavek emphasised the significance of the American Shelf as a bridge of knowledge between cultures. She expressed hope that the books would spark curiosity, foster understanding, and strengthen the ties between the two nations.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Fr. Jose Palely, Vice Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University; Dr. Sanjay Pratap Singh, Vice Chancellor of Royal Global University; and Prof. Kandarpa Das, Vice Chancellor of Girijananda Chowdhury University.

The American Shelf initiative is aimed at expanding regional knowledge and understanding of U.S. culture and education. It is hosted and managed by the Ph.D. Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Guwahati, with regular updates from the American Center in Kolkata to ensure continuous access to high-quality resources.

This initiative marks the second American Shelf in Northeast India, following the inauguration of a similar facility at St. Xavier’s College Jaluki, Nagaland, in December 2023.
